Someone walks into the shop with a wetsuit they have owned for a few seasons.
It is a recognised brand. It was expensive. When they bought it, they expected it to make swimming feel easier.
“It’s a good suit,” they tell us.
Then they roll their shoulders.
“I just wish I had a bit more freedom here.”
That conversation raises a question we have spent years thinking about:
If a wetsuit has excellent materials, why isn’t the swimmer having an excellent experience?
Sometimes the answer is the fit. Sometimes the material needs to be moved into position. Sometimes another model would suit that swimmer better.
But those conversations also made us look closely at the design itself.
They became the starting point for GLYDE.
We Had Years of Feedback Before We Designed a Suit
Over more than a decade of selling and fitting wetsuits, we have heard feedback from tens of thousands of swimmers.
We have helped people choose suits, listened after their first swim and seen what continued to bother them months later.
That gives you a different perspective from reading a specification sheet.
You hear where shoulders feel trapped. Where a chest feels compressed. Where someone loves the buoyancy but struggles with the movement. Where an impressive product has fallen short of what its owner expected.
You also see the moment a swimmer finds something that works.
They reach forward again. Their shoulders settle. Their expression changes.
“That feels completely different.”
GLYDE grew from wanting to understand—and build towards—that experience.
We Worked Backwards From What Needed to Improve
The obvious design questions are about more.
More flexibility. More buoyancy. More technology.
Our first question was about the swimmer:
What is getting in the way of their swim?
If the shoulders feel restricted, choosing stretchier material is only one possible part of the answer. We also need to consider the sleeve shape, the underarm, the chest, the back and how those areas connect.
If someone needs help maintaining their position, we need to consider where buoyancy belongs and how that support affects movement.
In many ways, we reverse-engineered our wetsuits around the feedback we had heard.
Each design choice needed a job. Each panel needed a reason for its shape, thickness and position.
That is why we believe GLYDE represents a step forward: our development began with problems swimmers had described over years of using wetsuits.
Freedom Through the Shoulders Needs a Complete Design
A shoulder moves through a repeated cycle every time you swim.
The sleeve needs to accommodate that movement, while the surrounding panels must allow it to do its job.
With GLYDE, we considered those areas together.
In models featuring our FREEARMS 1.5 mm construction, the thin arm material forms part of an approach to comfortable reach and movement. Its value depends on the cut, fit and panels around it as well as the material itself.
We want swimmers to feel that benefit when they extend into their stroke.
The question is how freely the finished suit allows you to move once it is fitted properly.
Breathing Comfort Deserves Attention Too
A suit can feel flexible through the arms and still feel demanding across the chest.
That matters when you are trying to settle into a rhythm, manage your effort or build confidence in open water.
Our BreathFlex chest construction, used in selected GLYDE models, places thin material through the chest as part of the design for comfortable expansion and movement.
We considered breathing comfort alongside shoulder freedom because swimmers experience both at once.
You reach, rotate and breathe throughout the swim. The suit needs to work with that whole movement.
Buoyancy Should Have a Purpose
Adding thicker neoprene can add lift. The important design decision is where to place it.
Across the GLYDE range, different buoyancy layouts give swimmers options according to their needs.
The Equinox uses HydroLift buoyancy, while the Zenith AIR incorporates AIRCORE panels from the ribs towards the knees, alongside FlowAlign side panels.
Those features have roles within the overall design. Choosing between them should involve a conversation about your swimming, body position, comfort and priorities.
We want useful support that works with your movement.
We Designed for the People We Had Spent Years Helping
Elite athletes provide valuable insight, but their experience represents a particular body, technique and set of priorities.
Our starting point included a much wider swimming community.
The person buying their first wetsuit. The regular ocean swimmer. The weekend triathlete. The experienced racer. The swimmer who wants to stay in the water longer without spending the whole time adjusting their suit.
Their feedback helped us understand how varied a good swimming experience needs to be.
Our belief is that getting comfortable breathing, freedom of movement and appropriate support right for those swimmers creates a strong foundation for elite athletes too.
You should be able to enjoy those fundamentals at your own level of swimming.
The Fitting and Advice Are Part of the Improvement
Even a carefully designed wetsuit needs to be chosen and fitted properly.
Material left too low through the legs or sleeves can create tension higher up. A size that looks right on a chart may need closer assessment once it is on your body.
That is where our retail and fitting experience becomes part of the GLYDE experience.
We can explain the differences between models, help position the material and listen to what you feel when you move.
The conversation continues after the purchase, too. Your first swim may raise questions that were difficult to answer on land.
We want that feedback. It is how this whole process began.
Why We Believe the Difference Matters
Other brands make good wetsuits, and the right choice will vary between swimmers. We would rather you understand and feel the reasons for choosing GLYDE than rely on a sweeping claim of superiority.
Our confidence comes from the experience behind the design.
Years of listening to swimmers. Looking beyond material specifications. Connecting panel shape, construction, flexibility and buoyancy to the problems people wanted solved.
That is where we believe we have made meaningful improvements.
You can book a free fitting with Dan Feisst at SwimT3 – The Swim Shop, 66 Mt Eden Road, and explore what those choices mean for you.
Reach forward. Take a full breath. Ask questions. Compare how the suits feel.
The most convincing difference is the one you can feel for yourself.
